Today in Irish History. Richard Nixon, Eamonn Andrews

November 5: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1968: Richard Nixon elected President of the United States. Nixon had Irish connections on both sides. Thomas Milhouse of Timahoe emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1729 was an ancestor of Hannah Milhouse – Nixon’s mother.

1987: Death of consummate Irish broadcaster and television personality Eamonn Andrews. Andrews is most famous for This Is Your Life which he hosted for 19 years.

Today in Irish History: The Great Famine. Irish Women’s Franchise League.

TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1846: Cork Examiner reported more famine deaths:

In the letter of an “Out-Door Pauper” from Macroom, will be found the recital of the death at Sleaven, from famine, of a poor woman, returning from the Workhouse, where she and her children had received their daily meal. The Tallow Relief Committee, in a resolution just forwarded to the Lord LIEUTENANT and which we give elsewhere, announce the death of another man, named KEEFFE, of Kilbeg, who also perished for want of food.

1908: Irish Women’s Franchise League was founded by Hanna Sheehy Skeffington and Margaret Cousins. with the intention of gaining voting rights for women.

1974: Judith Ward was wrongly convicted for the 1972 M62 coach bombing which 12 soldiers and family members. She spent seventeen years in Jail, before being exonerated.
