April 6,

Arrest of Oscar Wilde. Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams on this day in Irish History

1895: Oscar Wilde is arrested after losing his libel case against the Marquess of Queensbury. Married to Constance Lloyd and father of two children Cyril (1885-1915) and Vyvyan (1886-1967), Wilde was also conducting an ongoing affair with Lord Alfred “Bosie”  Douglas, the third son of the Marquess of Queensbury.  When the outraged Marquess called Wilde a homosexual, the Irish playwright took the silly decision to sue for libel. He lost, was arrested for homosexuality (then a crime) and sentenced to two years hard labor for gross indecency. Jail broke his spirit and a lonely, desolate, poverty striken  Wilde died in Paris in 1900 at age 46.

1926: Ian Paisley, Moderator and minister of the Free Presbyterian Church,  and dominating voice of reactionary loyalist emotion for most of the latter part of the twentieth century is born in Armagh. Paisley first came to prominence in the 1960s organizing demonstrations and loyalist paramilitary groups that often bordered on the edge of legality.

In 1969, Paisley was jailed along for organizing an illegal counter-demonstration against a Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march in Armagh. His bullying personality and robust  anti-papist rhetoric made him a hero amongst working class protestants. Over a period of time, the big man mellowed from one who was a leader architect of the downfall of the Sunningdale power sharing agreement to joining in government with life long foe (and alleged former IRA leader) Martin McGuinness. On 8 May 2007 Paisley was elected as First Minister of Northern Ireland with Martin McGuinness as the deputy First Minister.

2005: Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP made a direct appeal to the men and women of the IRA to commit themselves to purely political and democratic activity.

March 31,

Arthur Griffith Born. Comedian Dermot Morgan on this day in Irish History

March 30: TODAY in Irish History (by IrishmanSpeaks) Twitter Icon

1872: Birth of Arthur Griffith in Dublin, one of the most important players in Irish Independence. Griffith founded Sinn Féin in 1905 as an Irish nationalist party whose objective was “to establish in Ireland’s capital a national legislature endowed with the moral authority of the Irish nation”.

It was not until after the 1916 Rising that Sinn Féin became a major force in Irish politics winning a landslide majority of Irish seats in the 1918 General Election. Refusing to take their seats in the House of Commons, the party held the first Dail on January 21, 1919, proclaiming itself the rightful parliament of an Irish Republic. During the vicious War of Independence and in the absence of De Valera in America, Griffith served as Acting President (sometimes in Jail.) Griffith led the Irish truce negotiations in London accompanied by Michael Collins signing the Treaty in December 1921. Acrimonious debates in Dail Eireann let to a walkout by De Valera and anti-Treaty-ites. Griffith died August 1922, while Ireland was embroiled in a civil war over the Treaty.

1952: Comedian and actor Dermot Morgan (d. 1988) is born in Dublin. Morgan slowly but surely built a very successful career in Ireland before making it big in the UK playing Father Ted in the eponymous series.

Morgan was a gifted comedy writer and satirist who consistently poked fun at Irish society and in particular what turned out to be the corrupt political machinations of Taoiseach Charles Haughey.
