Today in Irish History: Sean MacBride Peace Prize. Balcombe Street Siege Ends.

December 12: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1920:  Referring IRA activity, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Cork, Daniel Colahan, issued a decree saying that “anyone within the diocese of Cork who organises or takes part in ambushes or murder or attempted murder shall be excommunicated”. Cork went on to become one of the most violent counties during the War of Independence. Proud Corkmen like to reference their county as the “Rebel County.”

1974: Sean MacBride receives Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo.

1975: A six day siege ends in Balcombe Street London after four IRA men surrender to British authorities and release two hostages. The so called Balcombe Street Gang – Martin O’Connell, Edward Butler, Harry Duggan and Hugh Doherty were charged with ten murders including that of Guinness Book of Records editor Ross McWhirter. Sentenced to life imprisonment, all four would be released in 1999 under the terms of the Good Friday accord.

Today in Irish History: Black and Tans Torch Cork City. Mairead Corrigan, Betty Williams Peace Prize

December 11: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1905: Erskine Childers, fourth President of Ireland, is born. In a lengthy and distinguished career as a TD, Childers role in cabinet included Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, Minister for Transport and Power and Minister for Health. His father Robert Erskine Childers was executed by Irish Government forces in the Civil War.

1920: Auxiliary and Black and Tan forces torch Cork city following further attacks by Irish rebels.

1977: Belfast women Mairead Corrigan and Betty Williams present their Nobel Peace Prize lecture for the 1976 peace prize award. Both women were effectively non-political and not involved in citizen activity prior to an incident in Belfast August 10, 1976. After being fatally shot by British troops, an IRA volunteer’s car went out of control and killed three childred of the sister of Mairead Corrigan. Corrigan and Williams founded a Community of Peace People which brought thousands from both communities to the streets seeking peace in Northern Ireland.
