Today In Irish History: The Irish at Gettysburg. Death of Wolfe Tone

TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by For the Love of Being Irish)

1798: Irish nationalist Wolfe Tone dies in jail from an apparently self-inflicted wound. Tone had been condemned to death for sedition by the British authorities. On the morning of his mooted execution, November 12th, he attempted to kill himself with a pen knife.

On being condemned, Tone stated from the dock:

I have laboured to abolish the infernal spirit of religious persecution, by uniting the Catholics and Dissenters. To the former I owe more than ever can be repaid. The service I was so fortunate as to render them they rewarded munificently; but they did more: when the public cry was raised against me—when the friends of my youth swarmed off and left me alone—the Catholics did not desert me; they had the virtue even to sacrifice their own interests to a rigid principle of honour; they refused, though strongly urged, to disgrace a man who, whatever his conduct towards the Government might have been, had faithfully and conscientiously discharged his duty towards them; and in so doing, though it was in my own case, I will say they showed an instance of public virtue of which I know not whether there exists another example.

Today in Irish History: Kennedy Elected President.

TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY: November 9 (published by For the Love of Being Irish)

1919: Irish Labour leader James Larkin is arrested in New York charged with circulating a publication advocating the forcible overthrow of the government.

1926: Irish playwright, author and humorist Hugh Leonard was born. The famous Abbey Theatre turned down an early play of his under his real name of John Byrne, featuring a character named Hughie Leonard.  As a joke or otherwise his next play, “The Big Birthday,”  was submitted by “Hugh Leonard.” Thus was the name born.  Just to confuse things further, he was known to his friends as “Jack.”  His most famous plays are Da and A Life.

1960: JFK wins US presidential election by the slim margin of 34,227,096 popular votes to Richard Nixon’s 34,107,646. He won the electoral college by a much wider margin of 337 votes to 185. The much publicized myth that Kennedy only won the election because Mayor Daly of Chicago “stole” Illinois for Kennedy is just that. Irrespective of what would have happened in Illinois, Kennedy did have sufficient electoral college votes to get the presidency. He was the youngest man voted into the White House, but not the youngest president. That was Theodore Roosevelt.  Kennedy visited Ireland in June 1963, following his famous Ich bien ein Berliner speech at the Berlin wall.
