1886: Home Rule Bill Defeated

The Home Rule Bill is defeated in House of Commons despite a protracted and emotional effort by Prime Minister William Gladstone. The defeat provoked major rioting in Belfast between Catholic and Protestants which would continue intermittently for a number of months. The initial incidents occurred between celebrating Protestant Loyalists and police whom Loyalists believed was a Catholic-dominated force. As reinforcements were called in from other parts of the country, their belief became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Between June and September, more than thirty people died in sectarian rioting.

The Royal Irish Constabulary became pawns in the rioting with both sides taunting and attacking them. The Irish dramatist and sometime journalist Frankfort Moore who was covering the rioting summed the RIC’s challenge up when recording the following incident:

‘Who have you there, Bill?’
‘A policeman’.
‘Hold on, and let me have a thump at him’.
‘Git along out of this, and find a policeman for yourself’.

1861: Irish Confederate Brigade

A lesser know Irish Brigade of the Civil War,The 6th Louisiana Infantry is organized at Camp Moore on 2 June, 1861, and mustered into Confederate service on 4 June, 1861. At a time when an estimated 20,000 Irish lived in New Orleans, it is not surprising that the 6th Louisiana would comprise a high percentage of Irish soldiers.

The infantry was commanded by Irish born Colonel Henry B. Strong who was killed at Sharpsburg September 17 1862.

1920: Sports Commentator Mícheál Ó hEithir

Mícheál Ó hEithir (Michael O’Hehir) is born in Dublin. Ó hEithir commentated on 99 GAA All Ireland hurling and football finals in a lengthy career. Just two weeks before he was scheduled to commentate on his 100th final, he suffered a stroke that prevented him working again. He died November 24, 1996.

He was also an astute horse racing commentator. The following video showcases his preparation and ability to “read” a horse race. It is the famous 1967 Grand National steeplechase where 100-1 shot Foinavon is the only horse to avoid a multiple pile-up. The Irishman received rave reviews for his ability to track what was happening and maintain his cool during probably the most extraordinary event in Grand National history.
