1900: Actor Noel Purcell is born in Dublin.

Dublin Actor Noel Purcell

Noel Purcell

Purcell was a beloved actor who played support roles in over seventy movies including Moby Dick. Dubliners of all ages appreciate his Dublin Saunter which was never a commercial hit for the gentlemanly actor, but is a piece he is well remembered for.

1920: The Government of Ireland Act is passed by British Parliament formally partitioning Ireland between The Irish Free State and Northern Ireland.

1920: Eamon De Valera returns from America where he presented himself as “President of Ireland.” De Valera evoked generous financial, emotional and political good will for Ireland during his eighteen month trip. He spoke at Madison Square Garden and Fenway Park drawing audiences in some cases of more than twenty thousand people. Even among Irish Americans, he created many enemies and many friends. In his book De Valera in America, author Dave Hannigan repeats Yeats’ oft quoted comment about the New York born De Valera “I was rather disappointed—A living argument rather than a living man, all propaganda, no human life, but not bitter hysterical or unjust.”

Today in Irish History: Carrickshock Incident, Saddam Hussein Capture

December 14: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1831: In what became known as the Carrickshock Incident, seventeen people including thirteen police constables are killed in a riot following an effort to serve tithe summons on Irish peasants. Tithes were taxes imposed by England on the almost universally Catholic Irish peasants to support the protestant Church of Ireland. The so called Tithe War ranged from 1831-1836 featuring numerous instances of violence.

1921: Dail starts debating Treaty. At a private Dail Eireann session, Eamonn de Valera proposed an Alternative Treaty of Association between Ireland and the British Commonwealth to void the agreement made by Michael Collins and other treaty negotiators. In a highly charged public session Michael Collins alluded to the fact that he had been called a traitor for signing the agreement in London.
