Today in Irish History: De Valera on Treaty Negotiations. Jack Lynch on Northern Ireland.

TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by For the Love of Being Irish)

1921: At cabinet meeting De Valera advised ” that whilst the utmost co-operation should exist between Dublin and London the plenipotentiaries (negotiators)  should have a perfectly free hand but should follow original instructions re important decisions.”

1942: Five Sullivan Brothers Die on SS Juneau

1968: Speaking about Northern Ireland, Taoiseach Jack Lynch stated in Dail Eireann, he  “hoped that as a result of my contact with Mr. Wilson and Mr. Wilson’s conversations with Captain O’Neill, the civil rights prospects would now become brighter and that the discrimination would be abolished; and that once we saw that was forthcoming we could re-establish north-south contacts.

Today in Irish History: Australian Bushranger Ned Kelly, Irish in World War I

TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by For the Love of Being Irish)

1880: Ned Kelly, outlaw, folk hero and quite probably simply a cold blooded police killer  of Irish parentage is executed.  He Kelly was born in Victoria to an Irish convict father. Kelly is famous in folklore for the metal army plate and helmet he wore when captured the previous June 28th. Mick Jagger played Ned Kelly in the 1970 movie of the same name.

1918: End of World War I. An estimated 140,000 Irish troops fought in the British army over the four years of conflict. An estimated 30,000 Irishmen died during the war. Participation in the British army, at the time and since, was a divisive factor in Irish politics. Some ardent Irish nationalists who fought in the later war of Irish Independence against Britain, served in the army believing the war was being fought for the betterment of “small nations.” The majority who fought were from loyalist Ulster, but many from nationalist Ireland served including County Cork born, Michael O’Leary who was one of 37 Irish soldiers to win the Victoria Cross in World War I.
