TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY

1745: Death of Jonathan Swift. Swift was probably the first great satirist in the English language. Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. his works include  Gulliver’s Travels, A Modest Proposal, and A Tale of a Tub.

1864: At Battle of Cedar Creek, VA, Irish born, Corporal John Walsh engaged in action which won him the Medal of Honor. Citation: Recaptured the flag of the 15th New Jersey Infantry.

1982: Car mogul John DeLorean was arrested and charged with cocaine distribution.  Four years previously, he started the DeLorean Motor Company in Northern Ireland. Few bought a DeLorean car. DeLorean claimed entrapment by federal authorities and was acquited.

1989:Guildford Four freed having spent 15 years in jail for Guildford bombing they did not commit.  Emerging from the court, one of the four, Gerard Conlon, shouted: “I have been in prison for something I did not do. I am totally innocent.”

TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY

1858: Boxer John L. Sullivan nicknamed The Boston Strongboy was born to He was born  immigrant parents, Michael Sullivan from Abbeydorney, County Kerryand the former Catherine Kelly from Athlone.

1890: Michael Collins was born in West Cork. Thirty one years later, he was in London negotiating the Anglo Irish treaty that brought independence to 26 counties of Ireland and begat a vicious civil war that resulted in his own death. The image here is featured in the book For the Love of Being Irish.

1922: Directives are sent to the Irish press by Free State director of communications, Piaras Beaslai to the effect that; Free State troops are to be referred to as the “National Army”, the “Irish Army”, or just “troops”. The Anti-Treaty side are to called “Irregulars” and are not to be referred to as “Republicans”, “IRA”, “forces”, or “troops”, nor are the ranks of their officers allowed to be given. No letters about the treatment of Anti-Treaty prisoners are to be published. The words “attacked, commandeered and arrested” as used to describe their actions are to be replaced by, “fired at, seized and kidnapped”.

1948: Irish songster Chris de Burgh was born (Christopher John Davison) in Argentina to a British diplomat Charles Davidson and an Irish mother Maeve Emily de Burgh. De Burgh’s daughter Rosanna won the Miss World title in 2003.
