Today in Irish History: Last British Troops Leave Free State

Dec 17: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1920: The IRA kill RIC Inspector Phillip O’Sullivan in Dublin while he is walking with his fiancee. O’Sullivan was from Michael Collins’ County Cork. In his book The Squad: and the Intelligence Operations of Michael Collins, historian T. Ryle Dwyer states that O’Sullivan’s fiancee was warned prior to the incident, “You are walking out with a Black and Tan. Beware.”

1922: Last British troops leave the twenty six counties of the Irish Free State. Based on this Pathe News video reel, it appears to have been a friendly farewell, even while Ireland was embroiled in its own civil war.

1945: Hardball presenter and unfailingly enthusiastic political commentator Chris Matthews is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Irish American parents. Prior to entering media circles, Matthews worked in the Carter administration and as aide to Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O’Neill whose grandfather hailed from Mallow, Co. Cork. Matthews latest book Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero about his own personal hero has received generally favorable reviews.

1983: An IRA bomb detonated near the world famous Harrods store in London kills six people – three police officers and three civilians.
