Wolfe Tone at Bantry Bay. Christy O’Connor. F. Scott Fitzgerald Dies.

December 21: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1796: Wolfe Tone writes in near despair of efforts to land French invasion forces at Bantry Bay. High winds and storms would mean the planned landing would be aborted some days later.

“We are now, nine o’clock, at the rendezvous appointed; stood in for the coast till twelve, when we were near enough to toss a biscuit ashore; at twelve tacked and stood out again, so now we have begun our cruise of five days in all its forms, and shall, in obedience to the letter of our instructions, ruin the expedition, and destroy the remnant of the French navy, with a precision and punctuality which will be truly edifying.”

1924: Famed Irish golfer Christy O’Connor (affectionately known as “Himself” ) is born in County Galway. “Himself” was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2009

1940: F Scott Fitzgerald dies of a heart attack at the age of forty four. Fitzgerald’s greatest opus The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 to wide acclaim. Although a literary success, Fitzgerald’s live was riddled with pain and despair caused by his excessive drinking and his wife’s mental instability.

Thomas Francis Meagher on Fredericksburg. Annie Moore at Ellis Island. “Da Mare” Dead

December 20: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1862: In the report he penned on this day about the Battle of Fredericksburg where so many of the Fighting 69 lost their lives on December 13,  Brigadier General Thomas Frances Meagher wrote  about the day after the terrible battle.

“Two hundred and eighty men only appeared under arms to represent the Irish Brigade. This little band, unswerved and undeterred, still full of heart, inspired by a bright sense of duty, sorrowful for their comrades, but prouder and still more emboldened that such men had fallen bravely as they did, awaited the word that was once again to precipitate them against the batteries and defenses of the enemy.”

Over twelve hundred men of the Irish Brigade started that battle.

Thomas Francis Meagher became Territorial Governor of Montana

1891: Fifteen year old Annie Moore departs Queenstown (now Cobh) with her two brothers. On January 1, she would be the first immigrant to be processed through Ellis Island.

1976: Death of Richard J. Daley, “Da Mare” of Chicago. Daley twenty one years in office is second only to that of his son Richard M. Daley.  Daley was a controversial figure who regularly mangled the English Language. In For the Love of Being Irish, author Conor Cunneen references one of Daley’s more memorable quotes. “They have vilified me, they have crucified me; yes, they have even criticized me.”
