Irish Treaty Debate. Irish Contraception Ban Overturned, Eamonn Andrews.

December 19: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1921: Acrimonious  Treaty debate starts in Dail Eireann. 

Arthur Griffith makes a moving speech on why Treaty should be adopted.

1922: Famed Irish broadcaster, boxing commentator and long time host of This Is Your Life Eamonn Andrews is born in Dublin. Here Eamonn Andrews spars with another famous “Irishman” Muhammad Ali.

1940: The Irish Lights ship Isolda which was resupplying light houses of the coast of Wexford is sunk by German bombers, despite Irish neutrality. Six sailors are killed.

1973: By a ruling of four to one, the Irish Supreme Court rules in McGee v. Attorney General and the Revenue Commissioners that Irish Customs (Revenue Commissioners),  had interfered with plaintiff’s constitutional rights to marital privacy when it seized contraceptives which Mary McGee, a married mother of four,  was attempting to import. The decision was to lead to years of legislative inaction as many politicians feared the power of the Catholic Church.

“Legs” Diamond Gets Whacked!

December 18: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by For the Love of Being Irish)

1931: Gangster, bootlegger, associate of Arnold Rothstein, Jack “Legs” Diamond (born Jack Moran of Irish emigrant parents) was gunned down while in a drunken stupor following  a court case acquittal.

“Legs” Diamond was one of a number of Irish Americans who gained infamy during the prohibition era. Other Irish gangsters who met a less than pretty fate included:

Vincent Mad Dog Coll born in Donegal Ireland

Mad Dog Coll (Donegal born Vincent Coll) who was allegedly involved in everything from murder, bootlegging, kidnapping and hijacking. Coll was only twenty four when killed.

Dion O'Banion

Dion O’Banion, one time choir boy of Irish parents was shot to death in his flower shop by associates of Al Capone in 1924.
