Samuel Ferguson

The following is an excerpt from Ferguson’s poem, The Fair Hills of Ireland

A PLENTEOUS place is Ireland for hospitable cheer,

Uileacan dubh O!

Where the wholesome fruit is bursting from the yellow barley ear;

Uileacan dubh O!

There is honey in the trees where her misty vales expand,

And her forest paths in summer are by falling waters fann’d,

There is dew at high noontide there, and springs i’ the yellow

On the fair hills of holy Ireland.

1888: Actor Barry Fitzgerald is born William Joseph Shields in Dublin.

Fitzgerald is the ONLY actor in Hollywood history to be nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for the same role, something he achieved as Father Fitzgibbon in the 1944 movie Going My Way with Bing Crosby.

2005: Death of Irish comedian Dave Allen (born David O’Mahoney 1936 in Dublin.) Allen was an irreverent comic who found fame in the UK, regularly poking  fun at the political and religious establishment.
