1973: Northern Ireland votes overwhelmingly to remain within the United Kingdom. In a referendum on the future of the province, 57% of the electorate (591,280 people) voted to retain current links with the UK. The nationalist / Roman Catholic population boycotted what they considered to be a meaningless election which ensured only 6,463 voted in favor of a united Ireland. Estimates suggest that less than one percent of Catholics voted.

1987: U2 release The Joshua Tree. The album included now U2 staples such asproduced the hit singles “With or Without You”, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, and “Where the Streets Have No Name”. Rolling Stone would name it the third best album of the 80s.

1959: Actor Aidan Quinn is born in Chicago to Irish parents. Quinn played anti-treaty politician Harry Boland in Neil Jordan’s movie Michael Collins.

.

1966: Irish republicans blow up Nelson’s PIllar in O’Connell Street Dublin. The pillar was seen by many as an anachronistic monument to English occupation of Ireland, especially as 1966 was the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Rising.

The bombing of Nelson’s Pillar became a humorous Cause Célèbre in popular culture as the following video clips featuring the Dubliners

The humorous song Up went Nelson sung by The Go Lucky Four was number one in the Irish charts for eight weeks in 1966!

1973: The IRA explodes two car bombs outside the Old Bailey courthouse in London, killing one person and injuring almost two hundred. One of those convicted, nineteen year old Gerry Kelly escaped from the Maze Prison in 1983, but was recaptured in 1986. He went on to become a member of Sinn Fein’s negotiating team for the Good Friday Agreement, and also served as a Sinn Fein Assembly Member for North Belfast in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
