ON THIS DAY

1769: Just ten years after Guinness is first brewed in St. James Gate, Dublin, the beautiful magic brew is first exported from Ireland. Six and a half barrels left for England. The rest is history!

1897: A heart broken, physically broken Oscar Wilde is released from prison after two years of hard labor. His experiences in prison were the basis for his poignant work, The Ballad of Reading Gaol (1898).

Following his release, Wilde fled to Paris and began writing again. He died of acute meningitis just three years after his release.

He would die two years later age 46, virtually destitute and converted to Catholicism on his deathbed.

His gravestone bears lines from The Ballad of Reading Gaol.

And alien tears will fill for him,

Pity’s long-broken urn,

For his mourners will be outcast men,

And outcasts always mourn.

1998: Once bitter opponents and now Nobel Peace Prize Winners,  David Trimble and John Hume meet on stage in Belfast where U2 are playing in support of the upcoming referendum to approve the Good Friday Agreement. The concert was staged to convince people “who have genuine concerns about the political agreement” to vote yes. The activist rock star say one way to persuade them would be “to deafen them, “ and commended Hume and Trimble as men “who had put a lot aside to make this happen.”

ON THIS DAY

2006: Michael O’Riordan, founder of the Communist Party of Ireland dies age 88. Not too surprisingly, O’Riordan fought a lonely battle in attempting to get the Irish population buy into Communism.

Originally active in the IRA following Irish independence, he joined the Communist Party of Ireland in 1935. During the 30s – a time of economic depression and hardship, Communism was seen by many in Europe and USA as the answer to the problems of the working class. O’Riordan fought in the Spanish Civil War with the  XVth International Brigade, being severely wounded on the Ebro front. He was repatriated to Ireland  in September 1938 after the International Brigades were disbanded.

His IRA activity during World War II saw him interned in 1939. Following his release in 1943, he played an active part in local politics and made five failed attempts to get elected to Dail Eireann. In 1965 he became full-time Secretary General of the Communist Party of Ireland, a post from which he retired in 1983, when he was elected National Chairman.

His impact on the Irish political scene was ultimately minimal, but even his opponents accepted him as a man of principle.

.

2009: Death of William “Willie” Moore, one of the dreaded Shankill Butchers  who terrorized Catholic communities in the 1970’s killing and torturing an estimated twenty people in the most horrific manner. The Shankill Butchers are probably the worst serial killers in British history.

Wikipedia provides chilling detail on these savages. (Not for the squemish). Read Belfast Telegraph article on Willie Moore. The author Martin Dillon authored The Shankill Butchers.
