Today in Irish History: John Hume. Birth of Charles Kean on this day in Irish History

January 18: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1811: Birth of Shakesperian actor Charles Kean in Waterford. Kean went on to act America and more regularly in London playing a number of Shakespeare’s major characters.

1937: Nobel Peace Prize winner and Nationalist politician, John Hume is born in Derry. Hume played a prominent and decisive role in the Northern Ireland peace process. He got involved in the civil rights movement in the 1960s and worked tirelessly to improve the lot of discriminated Catholics, but also build bridges with the Loyalist Community.

John Hume was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998 with David Trimble. In a poll conducted by Irish broadcasting network RTE, John Hume was voted Ireland’s Greatest person in 2010.

1978: In a very public slap in the face, The European Court of Human Rights found the British Government guilty of inhuman and degrading treatment of prisoners in Northern Ireland.

2008: Long time adversary of John Hume, the Reverend Ian Paisley retires from active politics.
