1864: Colonel Patrick Kelly dies at Petersburg
Tuam Co. Galway born Colonel Patrick Kelly of the Irish Brigade (The Fighting Irish) dies at the Siege of Petersburg while leading the Irish Brigade forward against a Confederate position.
Kelly had been one of the organizers of The 63rd New York Volunteers, known as the “Third Irish” at the start of the Civil War. He is buried at Calvary Cemetary New York along with fellow Irish officer Michael Corcoran and Dublin born Thomas Corcoran (no relation). Corcoran won the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Siege of Vicksburg.
