1815: The Battle of Waterloo where Napolean’s French forces are defeated by allied troops of England under Dublin born Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke of Wellington and Prussian troops under the command of General Blucher. Following the victory at Waterloo, Wellington went on to have a distinguished political career. Although on record as making disparaging remarks about his birthland, as Prime Minister he steered through the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829 which allowed Catholics become Members of Parliament.

1901: Writer Denis Johnston is born in Dublin.

Johnston’s include The Old Lady Says ‘No’; The Bride for the Unicorn; The Golden Cuckoo ; The Dreaming Dust; Strange Occurrence on Ireland’s Eye.

1994: The Republic of Ireland defeat Italy 1-0 in their opening World Cup game at Giants Stadium, New Jersey. The  goal was scored by Aston Villa player Ray Houghton.

1994: While the Republic of Ireland – Italy game is going on, two members of the Loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force walk into The Heights Bar in Loughinisland Co. Down with assault rifles and kill six Catholics who are watching the game. It was the third attack by UVF in three days in retaliation for the killing the of three of their members by the Republican Irish National Liberation Armyon June 16th.
