1828: Daniel O’Connell wins a by-election in County Clare defeating William Vesey Fitzgerald. O’Connell’s election ultimately forced Catholic Emancipation to allow Catholics become Members of Parliament.

1958: Journalist Veronica Guerin is born in Dublin.
Already internationally recognized for her reporting on a rampant crime situation in Dublin, she became world famous when on June 26 1996, she was murdered on the orders of one of Dublin’s biggest crime lords. Guerin had been the recipient of numerous death threats and had previously been assaulted in the course of her work. In 1995, she was a recipient of the International Press Freedom Award “g iven annually to journalists around the world who have courageously provided independent news coverage and viewpoints under difficult circumstances.”
Guerin was shot six times traffic lights on the outskirts of Dublin by a gunman on a motorcycle ridden by Brian Meehan, the only person to be convicted in the affair. Meehan is serving a life sentence for the murder of Veronica Guerin.

1993: 1.6 million copies of Zooropa, U2’s new album are shipped to support the launch. The album is one of the bank’s less successful works and few of the songs on it are ever performed live by Bono and company.
