1899: First Posthumous World World War I Victoria Cross Winner
Maurice James Dease the first soldier to win a Victoria Cross medal in WWI is born in Coole, Co. Westmeath. Dease won the medal for his bravery during the Battle of Mons Belgium, just nineteen days after World War I breaks out.

Dease’s name is spelled incorrectly in this clipping
Dease was awarded the Victoria Cross for his valor, the first posthumous recipient of the VC. His citation reads:
“”On 23rd August 1914 at Mons, Belgium, Nimy Bridge was being defended by a single company of Royal Fusiliers and a machine gun section with Lieutenant Dease in command. The gunfire was intense, and the casualties were heavy, but the Lieutenant went on firing in spite of his wounds, until he was hit for the 5th time and was carried away to a place of safety where he died.”

1902: Birth of Ed Sullivan
Legendary TV host Ed Sullivan was born in New York. His grandfather was an Irish emigrant. Sullivan was irascible, cranky and often vindictive, but he was a consummate TV performer who had a knack for breaking talent. Artists that appeared on his show include The Beatles, Elvis Presley who famously was only filmed from the waste up in one appearance so his swiveling hips wouldn’t ruin American morals. The guardian of American morality also insisted that The Rolling Stones change the lyrics of “Let’s Spend The Night Together” to “Let’s Spend Some Time Together” when they appeared on the show in 1967.

1963: JFK dedicates the Whiskeytown Dam in California.
One year after the Mississippi crisis, President Kennedy has a more appealing job to perform.
Kennedy’s speech in opening and tone is very similar to many of the humdrum speeches he had to make at events like this, although it must be said his effort to say something interesting about Whiskeytown is a bit forced.
