1798: Rebels Prepare for Attack on Gorey
Irish rebels under Rev. John Murphy, encamp at Corrigrua, County of Wexford preparing for an attack on Gorey. The force consisted of about 10,000 men, armed chiefly with pikes, without artillery, and with little musketry.

1973: British Troop Casualties Mount in Northern Ireland
British troop casualties mount in Northern Ireland as the IRA campaign becomes more skillful and deadly. On this day, the fifth soldier to die following a booby-trap bomb attack in Omagh, County Tyrone on May 17 passes away. Four soldiers were killed instantly on the day.

1974: IRA Hunger Striker Michael Gaughan
IRA hunger striker Michael “Mickey” Gaughan dies in Parkhurst Prison following a 64 day hunger-strike. The Mayo-born Gaughan was initially arrested following an IRA bank raid in London. Sentenced to seven years jail, on 31 March 1974, Gaughan, along with other Republican activists Gerry Kelly, Paul Holme, Hugh Feeney and fellow Mayoman Frank Stagg, went on hunger strike to support the efforts of Dolours and Marion Price to obtain political status and to be transferred to a jail in Ireland.
Gaughan was aggressively force-fed during the last days of his hunger strike, but he finally succumbed June 3.

1975: Northern Ireland Troubles Continue
In Kileen, Co. Armagh, the IRA kill Ulster Defence Regiment member Alfred Doyle who is a passenger in a car driven by civilian David Thompson. Thompson and another civilian John Presha are also killed.
