1777: The Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation, the first written constitution of the United States is adopted by the Continental Congress. A number of the Congress hailed from Ireland including Secretary of the Congress Charles Thomson who was born in Maghera, County Derry in 1729. Thomson was the permanent Secretary of the Continental Congress for more than fifteen years. At least three signatories to the Declaration of Independence were Irish – James Smith, George Taylor and Matthew Thornton

1958: Death of Tyrone Power
Screen idol Tyrone Power, descendant of Irish born actor and comedian Tyrone Power (1795-1841) dies at age of 44 from a heart attack.

1985: Anglo-Irish Irish Agreement signed
Anglo-Irish Irish Agreement signed which gives Dublin government an advisory role in Northern Ireland is signed by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald at Hillsborough Castle in County Down. Dublin a role in Northern Ireland for the first time in more than 60 years allowing a framework for regular conferences between British and Irish ministers to discuss matters affecting Northern Ireland.
Not surprisingly, the agreement was vehemently opposed by leading Loyalist figures but also by some of Mrs. Thatcher’s closest ally. Treasury minister Ian Gow resigned in protest. Gow paid dearly for his stance on Northern Ireland. He was killed by an IRA bomb placed in his car on July 30 1990.
