1874: Cathal Brugha
Irish nationalist Cathal Brugha is born in Dublin
- Cathal brugha
Elected TD for Waterford in the 1918 General Election,Cathal Brugha was Minister for Defence (effectively Chief of Staff of the IRA) from April 1919 to January 1922. (Sinn Fein refused to recognize the British Parliament and set up a provisional Irish government as the War of Independence raged) Brugha was elected President of the Republic when the Dail met in 1919 but resigned the position in favour of Eamon de Valera.
On July 7th, Cathal Brugha died from wounds sustained two days previously following the destruction of The Four Courts, the first major action in the Irish Civil War.

1973: Abolition of Governor of Northern Ireland
The mainly ceremonial post of Governor of Northern Ireland is abolished under Section 32 of the Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973. The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, a cabinet office that had been created in 1972, took over the functions of the Governor.

2004: Eoin McKiernan – Irish Studies Scolar
Death of Irish Studies scholar Eoin McKiernan. McKiernan founded the Irish American Cultural Center in 1962. His obituary reads: “Mr. McKiernan was credited with leading efforts to revive and preserve the Irish culture and language in the United States. He wanted people to see beyond the hoopla of St. Patrick’s Day and enjoy Irish folktales, artists, dances, and history.”
