1827: Sligo born General Michael Corcoran – Union Hero

Civil War General Michael Corcoran is born in Ballymote, Co. Sligo.  Corcoran emigrated to the United States in his early twenties and shortly after joined the military as a private. By the onset of the Civil War, he was a Colonel about to face court martial!

In Ireland and USA, Corcoran was virulently anti-English. When ordered to parade his command for the visiting Prince of Wales, he refused which is not too surprising given that he has seen many of the horrors of the potato famine. As a result of this refusal, he was relieved of his command and faced a court-martiall. The commencement of the Civil War saved his military career and the court-martial was never proceeded with.

Corcoran fought in numerous campaigns with The Irish Brigade under the command of the legendary Thomas Francis Meagher. At the Battle of Bull Run, he may well have come in direct conflict with another West of Ireland man Galway-born Colonel Patrick Moore who commanded the 1^st Virginia Regiment.

Corcoran was killed, age 36, in December 1863 when his horse stumbled and fell on him.

1949: IRELAND Beats England in Soccer

Ireland’s soccer team beat England 2-0 at Goodison Park. Liverpool. This is first time an English soccer team was beaten at home. Ireland’s goals were scored by Con Martin and Peter Farrell. The team was captained by Manchester United legend Johnny Carey.

George Clooney makes his first appearance in the TV Series The Facts of Life. Clooney’s paternal ancestors emigrated from Co. Kilkenny.
