Today in Irish History
1920: Rineen Ambush, Co Clare. IRA’s Mid-Clare Brigade ambushed and killed 6 Royal Irish Constabulary officers during the War of Independence.
1927: Irish American fighters Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney participated fought for the World Heavyweight Title in a fight that became knows as “The Long Count.” Dempsey’s failure to move to a neutral corner after knocking Tunney down in this rematch, delayed the start of the count allowing Tunney to get off the canvas as the referee finally counted to nine. Gene Tunney was son of emigrants John Tunney and Mary Lydon, both from Co. Mayo. Both of Dempsey’s parents were of Irish extraction. The fight took place in Soldier Field and was in some ways a precursor to the manner Jay Cutler tends to get hammered there!
1943: Irish artist Robert Ballagh is born in Dublin
