1919: James Larkin Arrested in New York

Irish Labour leader James Larkin is arrested in New York charged with criminal anarchy. The indictment states that “Larkin and his co-defendant Benjamin Gitlow were described in the indictment as “men of intelligence, with considerable experience in public affairs, and all this either from honest fanaticism, gross egotism, venomous class hatred, criminal ambition, conceited ignorance on great subjects, or muddled thought they have perverted into the most dangerous channels. As they stand today, as against the organized government specified in this statute, they are positively dangerous men.” He was sentenced to 5-10 years in jail but was pardoned in 1923.

Irish playwright, author and humorist Hugh Leonard is born, John Byrne. The famous Abbey Theatre turned down an early play of his under his real name, featuring a character named Hughie Leonard.  As a joke or otherwise his next play, “The Big Birthday,”  was submitted by “Hugh Leonard.” Thus was the name born.  Just to confuse things further, he was known to his friends as “Jack.”  His most famous plays are Da and A Life.

1960: John Fitzgerald Kennedy Elected President

President Kennedy election

The much publicized myth that Kennedy only won the election because Mayor Daley of Chicago “stole” Illinois for Kennedy is just that. Irrespective of what would have happened in Illinois, Kennedy did have sufficient electoral college votes to get the presidency. He was the youngest man voted into the White House, but not the youngest president. That was Theodore Roosevelt.  Kennedy visited Ireland in June 1963, following his famous Ich bien ein Berliner speech at the Berlin wall.

1897: Gangster, bootlegger, associate of Arnold Rothstein, Jack “Legs” Diamond is born Jack Moran to Irish immigrants Sara and John Moran in Philadelphia. Diamond was a nasty piece of work, unafraid to kill anyone who got in his way. His activities ensured bloody gang warfare especially involving another east coast mobster Dutch Schultz who tried to have “Legs” whacked on a number of occasions. At the time, one of Schultz’s main enforcers was Vincent “Mad Dog” Coll who was born in Gweedore, County Donegal.

“Legs” Diamond was finally gunned down while in a drunken stupor following  a court case acquittal.

1917: Eamonn De Valera wins his first election, winning the Clare East by-Election as a Sinn Fein candidate. He refuses to take his seat in the House of Commons. The election was caused due to the death of Irish Nationalist MP Willie Redmond who like so many Irish volunteered to fight in the British Army believing it would bring Irish independence closer.

1927: Kevin O’Higgins the Irish Minister for Justice is gunned down by Anti-Treaty activists on his way to Sunday Mass. Although the Irish Civil War finished in 1923, many on the losing anti-Treaty side harbored much ill feeling to people like O’Higgins who had ordered the execution of many fellow Irishmen during the Civil War including Rory O’Connor who had been Best Man at O’Higgin’s wedding. O’Higgin’s own father had been gunned down by the IRA in 1923. The brutal suppression of the Anti-Treatyites by the Free State Government brought a quick end to a vicious civil war, but also helped usher full scale democratic politics into the new country. By 1932, the leader of the Anti-Treaty movement Eamonn De Valera was forming his first Irish government.
