1885: Death of Monaghan born Confederate General Joseph Finnegan

.

Joseph Finegan 1814-1885

.

Finegan was born in Clones, Co. Monaghan in 1814 and emigrated to the United States in the 1830s. He settled in Florida where he became a highly successful businessman.

During the civil war, he was commissioned a Brigadier General. Finegan’s campaign included  the battles  of  Olustee  and Cold Harbor.

At Olustee, Finegan’s 5,000 troops defeated Union forces under Brigadier General Truman Seymour. Finegan has been criticized for failing to pursue Union troops in disarray.

Still life painter William Hartnett dies in New York.

Hartnett was born in Clonakilty, Co. Cork in 1848, one year before his family emigrated and settled in the Philadelphia area. Hartnett was known for his trompe l’oeil still life painting of everyday objects. Hartnett’s later life was ravaged by rheumatism which impacted his ability to work.

1516: Mary, Queen of England and Ireland is born

She was daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Arragon. She reigned from 1553-1558 during which she restored Catholicism as the official religion, putting numerous dissenters (i.e. Protestants) to the stake which earned her the title “Bloody Mary.”

Walter Paye Lane 

Lane’s family emigrated when he was four. He eventually settled in Texas and became a strong proponent of secession. Prior to the Civil War, he fought with distinction in the Mexican War.

James Rowan O’Beirne

County Roscommon born Civil  war veteran James Rowan O’Beirne dies at age seventy three. O’Beirne rose to the rank of Brigadier General and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for having “gallantly maintained the line of battle until ordered to fall back” at Fair Oaks, Va., May 31-June 1, 1862.

O’Beirne was a major player in the pursuit of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth.
