Today in Irish History: Anglo Irish Treaty Signed. Michael Collins Signs His “Death Warrant.”

TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by For the Love of Being Irish)

1921: In the early hours of the morning, the Articles of Agreement for a Treaty between Great Britain and Ireland was signed in London. It brought to an end the Irish War of Independence, though tragically led to the Irish Civil War. The treaty allowed for the twenty-six counties of Ireland to have autonomy from Britain while remaining in the British Empire. Northern Ireland, which had been created by the 1920 Government of Ireland Act had the option to opt out of the new Irish Free State, an option it duly exercised.

Collins wrote later that day a terribly prophetic statement:

“When you have sweated, toiled, had mad dreams, hopeless nightmares, you find yourself in London’s streets, cold and dank in the night air. Think—what have I got for Ireland? Something which she has wanted these past seven hundred years. Will anyone be satisfied at the bargain? Will anyone? I tell you this; early this morning I signed my death warrant. I thought at the time how odd , how ridiculous —a bullet may just as well have done the job five years ago.”

1922: Irish Free State is established as a Dominion of the British Empire, one year after the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. For one day, it encompassed ALL of Ireland. On December 7th, Northern Ireland opted out and remained part of the United Kingdom.

Sean Keating Irish Painter Born. Cork Born VC Winner. Today in Irish History

Welcome to Today in Irish History.

This is a website that provides you with interesting insight and information on what happened on this day in Irish history and people of Irish heritage. To be completely honest, I started this site to sell my book For the Love of Being Irish which is an A-Z of all things Irish. This is a book that contains History, Horror, Humor, Passion, Pathos and Lyrical Limericks that will have you giving thanks (or wishing you were) For the Love of Being Irish

This is a book I am hugely proud of, not least because of the fantastic illustrations done by Mark Anderson.

Today in Irish History

1889: Irish painter Sean Keating was born in Limerick. Some sources suggest his birth date was Sept. 28th. Whatever, he was a great Irish gift to the world of painting.

This painting Men of the South is on display at the Crawford Gallery in my native Cork.

Irish Gift Ideas
