Welcome to Today in Irish History.
This is a website that provides you with interesting insight and information on what happened on this day in Irish history and people of Irish heritage. To be completely honest, I started this site to sell my book For the Love of Being Irish which is an A-Z of all things Irish. This is a book that contains History, Horror, Humor, Passion, Pathos and Lyrical Limericks that will have you giving thanks (or wishing you were) For the Love of Being Irish
This is a book I am hugely proud of, not least because of the fantastic illustrations done by Mark Anderson.
Today in Irish History
1889: Irish painter Sean Keating was born in Limerick. Some sources suggest his birth date was Sept. 28th. Whatever, he was a great Irish gift to the world of painting.
This painting Men of the South is on display at the Crawford Gallery in my native Cork.
1905: Dublin born Thomas Bernardo, philanthropist and founder of Dr. Bernardo’s Home for disadvantaged kids died.
1944: Cork born David Lord (1913) was killed at Arnhem, Holland. Flight Lieutenant Lord was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in piloting a Dakota during resupply operations.
