1904: Co. Laois born William Russel Grace dies. Grace was the first Roman Catholic mayor of New York and was founder of W.R Grace in 1854.

1914: The Curragh Mutiny: 57 British army officers threaten to resign or accept dismissal if   they are ordered to Northern Ireland and (potentially) fight members of the Ulster Volunteer Force who were threatening to take up arms to fight the Home Rule bill granting Ireland an autonomous Parliament. The Liberal government backed down and agreed to delay implementation of the bill. World War I put paid to the implementation of Home Rule for Ireland until the Irish War of Independence forced Britain to the treaty table in December 1921.

1921: A number of IRA attacks take place in County Kerry. The Second Kerry Brigade of the IRA ambush a train carrying British troops at Headford Junction railway station resulting in the deaths of at least three civilians, two IRA members and an undetermined number of English troops. (Some estimates suggest as many as 10). In Lispole, near Dingle, an IRA ambush goes badly wrong resulting in the deaths of three IRA volunteers.

1987: Internecine conflict often permeated republican politics. On this day, the IPLO (Irish People’s Liberation Organization, a breakaway group from the INLA – Irish National Liberation Army) kills INLA members Emmanuel Gargan in a Belfast bar and Kevin Barry Duffy in Armagh. The killings are in retaliation for the INLA execution of IPLO leader Gerard Steenson some days earlier. For different perceptions on the Republican struggle see IPLO and INLA

Ongoing feuding and violence continued between republican factions. The IPLO which allegedly was involved in drug dealing, effectively ceased activities after the Provisional IRA killed Belfast Brigade leader Sammy Ward in 1992.

December 10,

Today in Irish History: John Hume, David Trimble Nobel Peace Prize

December 10th: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1920: In response to increasing violence and deaths, the British declare martial law in Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary.

1998: John Hume and David Trimble receive the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Northern Ireland.”

In accepting the award Hume spoke about  the “extraordinary courage and fortitude by individual men and women, innocent victims of violence. Amid shattered lives, a quiet heroism has born silent rebuke to the evil that violence represents, to the carnage and waste of violence, to its ultimate futility.”

In his Nobel Peace Prize lecture, David Trimble spoke with humor “the way politics work in Northern Ireland – if John Hume has a medal, it is important that I have one too” and with a strong historical perspective. Referencing famed Irish born orator and parliamentarian Edmund Burke  who “of course he has special significance for us in Ireland. Burke, the son of a protestant father and a catholic mother, was a man who in word and in deed honoured both religious traditions, recognised and respected his Irish roots and the British Parliamentary system which nursed him to the full flowering of his genius. Today as we seek to decommission not only arms and ammunition, but also hearts and minds, Burke provides us not only with a powerful role model of the pluralist Irishman, but also with a powerful role model for politicians everywhere.

Burke is the best model for what might be called politicians of the possible. Politicians who seek to make a working peace, not in some perfect world, that never was, but in this, the flawed world, which is our only workshop.”

In 2010, John Hume in a phone and text poll conducted by Irish national broadcaster RTE, was voted Ireland’s Greatest.
