1904: Co. Laois born William Russel Grace dies. Grace was the first Roman Catholic mayor of New York and was founder of W.R Grace in 1854.

1914: The Curragh Mutiny: 57 British army officers threaten to resign or accept dismissal if   they are ordered to Northern Ireland and (potentially) fight members of the Ulster Volunteer Force who were threatening to take up arms to fight the Home Rule bill granting Ireland an autonomous Parliament. The Liberal government backed down and agreed to delay implementation of the bill. World War I put paid to the implementation of Home Rule for Ireland until the Irish War of Independence forced Britain to the treaty table in December 1921.

1921: A number of IRA attacks take place in County Kerry. The Second Kerry Brigade of the IRA ambush a train carrying British troops at Headford Junction railway station resulting in the deaths of at least three civilians, two IRA members and an undetermined number of English troops. (Some estimates suggest as many as 10). In Lispole, near Dingle, an IRA ambush goes badly wrong resulting in the deaths of three IRA volunteers.

1987: Internecine conflict often permeated republican politics. On this day, the IPLO (Irish People’s Liberation Organization, a breakaway group from the INLA – Irish National Liberation Army) kills INLA members Emmanuel Gargan in a Belfast bar and Kevin Barry Duffy in Armagh. The killings are in retaliation for the INLA execution of IPLO leader Gerard Steenson some days earlier. For different perceptions on the Republican struggle see IPLO and INLA

Ongoing feuding and violence continued between republican factions. The IPLO which allegedly was involved in drug dealing, effectively ceased activities after the Provisional IRA killed Belfast Brigade leader Sammy Ward in 1992.
