TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY

1867: Irish born Sergeant Major Joseph Keele (182d New York Infantry)awarded Medal of Honor for action in Civil War. Citation: Voluntarily and at the risk of his life carried orders to the brigade commander, which resulted in saving the works his regiment was defending.

1917: Eamonn De Valera (released from prison in June)  replaces Arthur Griffith as the president of Sinn Féin.

1920: Sinn Fein Lord Mayor of Cork dies in Brixton prison England following a 74 hunger strike. This clip from British Pathe News shows funeral of McSwiney. Famous Irish personalities to be seen in it include De Valera and Arthur Griffith. McSwiney’s funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Cork.

2002: Limerick born actor Richard Harris dies.
