1831: Rioters Kill 13 Police – The Carrickshock Incident

In what became known as the Carrickshock Incident, seventeen people including thirteen police constables are killed in a riot following an effort to serve tithe summons on Irish peasants. Tithes were taxes imposed by England on the almost universally Catholic Irish peasants to support the protestant Church of Ireland. The so called Tithe War ranged from 1831-1836 featuring numerous instances of violence.

January 7,

Independent Irish Parliament. Dail Eireann Votes for Treaty

January 7: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1919: Sinn Féin MPs met in the Mansion House and agree to convene Dáil Eireann as an independent parliament of Ireland.

1922: After a vitriolic and bitter debate, between one time compatriots, the Dail approved the Anglo-Irish Treaty by 64 votes to 57. Speaking of Michael Collins, Anti-Treaty lobbyist, Cathal Brugha said: “One member was specially selected by the Press and the people to put him into a position which he never held; he was made a romantic figure, a mystical character such as this person certainly is not; the gentleman I refer to is Mr. Michael Collins.”

The stage was being set for a vicious Irish Civil War. Read the Treaty Debate January 7th 1922

Senior members of the IRA who had fought so hard to oust Britain from Ireland were now on different sides. The pro-Treaty side included Richard Mulcahy, Eoin O’Duffy, Michael Collins, Emmet Dalton, Piaras Bealsai. The  anti- Treaty side included Rory O’Connor,  Liam Mellows,  Cathal Brugha,  Austen Stack, Countess Markievicz and President of the Dail Eamonn De Valera.
