1689: The Siege of Derry begins and would continue until July 28. This famous siege where the protestant population withstood a siege from the Catholic forces of King James II is celebrated every August with the Apprentice Boys Parade.
1912: 705 Titanic survivors arrive in New York on board the Carpathia.
Carpathia was sunk in the Atlantic on 17 July 1918 after being torpedoed by an German U-boat.
1949: The twenty-six counties of Ireland withdrawal from the British Commonwealth is recognized officially by Britain becomes the independent Republic of Ireland. The Ireland Act 1949 passed by the House of Commons recognized the withdrawal.

1963: Irish American comedian and chat show host Conan O’Brien is born in Brookline, Massachusetts.
