Robert Emmet Executed. Kevin Barry Captured. Confederate Irish fight at Chickamauga

Welcome to Today in Irish History.

This is a website that provides you with interesting insight and information on what happened on this day in Irish history and people of Irish heritage. To be completely honest, I started this site to sell my book For the Love of Being Irish which is an A-Z of all things Irish. This is a book that contains History, Horror, Humor, Passion, Pathos and Lyrical Limericks that will have you giving thanks (or wishing you were) For the Love of Being Irish

This is a book I am hugely proud of, not least because of the fantastic illustrations done by Mark Anderson.

1920: Twenty year old Kevin Barry was captured by the British following an ambush on British troops in Dublin. He was to become the first Irish Republican to be executed by the British since Easter Rising.

More Irish history in For the Love of Being Irish

1963: John F Kennedy addressed General Assembly of UN and suggested US and USSR should co-operate on a moon mission.

Today in Irish History

1889: Irish painter Sean Keating was born in Limerick. Some sources suggest his birth date was Sept. 28th. Whatever, he was a great Irish gift to the world of painting.

This painting Men of the South is on display at the Crawford Gallery in my native Cork.

Irish Gift Ideas

1905: Dublin born Thomas Bernardo, philanthropist and founder of Dr. Bernardo’s Home for disadvantaged kids died.

1944: Cork born David Lord (1913) was killed at Arnhem, Holland. Flight Lieutenant Lord was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in piloting a Dakota during resupply operations.
