1850: Archbishop  of Sydney Michael Kelly

Michael Kelly, fourth Roman Catholic archbishop of Sydney is born in  Waterford. Kelly was a leading figure in the foundation in 1901 of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association of the Sacred Heart, the primary temperance organization in Ireland.

1956: Liam Brady

Arsenal and Ireland Liam Brady

Liam Brady, possibly the greatest footballer to play for the Republic of Ireland is born in Dublin. The gifted mid-field player spent most of his career with Arsenal where he won an FA Cup medal. Between 1981-87, he played for four clubs in Italy, winning the Italian League Championship on two occasions with Juventus. He played for Ireland 72 times, scoring 9 goals. Today he is on the coaching staff of Arsenal FC

1998: Death of John Cowley of The Riordans

John Cowley was one of the most recognized actors in Ireland in the 60s and 70s due to his role in the RTE drama The Riordans where he played farmer Tom Riordan. Cowley played minor roles in numerous other productions including The Field and The Avengers
