1885: Death of Monaghan born Confederate General Joseph Finnegan

Finegan was born in Clones, Co. Monaghan in 1814 and emigrated to the United States in the 1830s. He settled in Florida where he became a highly successful businessman.
During the civil war, he was commissioned a Brigadier General. Finegan’s campaign included the battles of Olustee and Cold Harbor.
At Olustee, Finegan’s 5,000 troops defeated Union forces under Brigadier General Truman Seymour. Finegan has been criticized for failing to pursue Union troops in disarray.

1892: Still Life Painter William Hartnett
Still life painter William Hartnett dies in New York.

Hartnett was born in Clonakilty, Co. Cork in 1848, one year before his family emigrated and settled in the Philadelphia area. Hartnett was known for his trompe l’oeil still life painting of everyday objects. Hartnett’s later life was ravaged by rheumatism which impacted his ability to work.
