OCT 8th: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY
1862: General Philip Sheridan played a key role for the Union army in the Battle of Perryville. Sheridan was the son son of Irish immigrants John and Mary Sheridan from County Cavan. He was nick-named Little Phil due to his short stature – 5’5″.

1959: Singer Gavin Friday, singer, composer,good buddy of Bono’s and founder of post-punk band The Virgin Prunes was born Fionán Martin Hanvey.
1974: Sean MacBride was awarded a half-share of the Nobel Peace Prize for his work. Born on January 26, 1904 in Paris, the son of John MacBride (executed for 1916 rising) and Maud Gonne, he took an active part in the War of Irish independence. MacBride went on to become a distinguished jurist and was a founding member of Amnesty International.
