TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY
1790: Father Theobald Mathew, founder of the The Total Abstinence Association was born. Father Mathew encouraged people to take the following pledge: I promise to abstain from all intoxicating drinks except used medicinally and by order of a medical man and to discountenance the cause and practice of intemperance.
1918: German U-boat sinks mailboat RMS Leinster in the Irish channel.
1921: Irish delegation in London for Anglo-Irish peace talks which would begin the following day.
1969: British government announced theĀ abolition of the Ulster Special Constabulary, know as the ‘B Specials’. The ‘B Specials’ were perceived as a Ā loyalist gang of thugs by the Catholic / Nationalist minority.
1999: Ireland beaten by Australia in Rugby World Cup at Lansdowne Road, Dublin: 23-3.
