1892: General Eoin O’Duffy, first commissioner of the Garda Síochána born.
1910: The hull of the RMS Olympic, sister-ship to the ill-fated RMS Titanic, is launched from the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland.
1917: William Butler Yeats married 25-year-old Georgie Hyde-Lees (1892–1968),
1979: Paul O’Connell, Irish rugby player born.
1999: Death of former Taoiseach and Charlie Haughey nemesis (and vice-versa) Jack Lynch. In the 1940’s he won six All Ireland’s in successive years in hurling and football.
