1847: Letter published in Cork Examiner complaining about the “disgraceful practice” of proselytizing or soul-jobbing, where destitute Irish were encouraged to change faith for food.
1854: Birth of Horace Plunkett, agricultural reformer, and founder of Irish co-operative movement.
