TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by For the Love of Being Irish)
1729: Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress and a Patriot leader during the American Revolution is born in Maghera, Co. Derry. Thomson remained Secretary of the Congress for fifteen years and his name appears on the first published version of the Declaration of Independence.
Thomson is one of the co-designers of the Seal of the United States.
1898: C.S. Lewis author of The Chronicles of Narnia and ardent Christian writer is born in Belfast.
1905: Sinn Fein is founded by Arthur Griffith with the policy “to establish in Ireland’s capital a national legislature endowed with the moral authority of the Irish nation”.[
1993: It is revealed that the British Government is having secret meetings with the IRA which enrages the Unionist community. In the House of Commons, an irate Ian Paisley accused Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Patrick Mayhew of lying about the meetings and was suspended from proceedings for five days.
1999: Northern Ireland Power Sharing Executive appointed under the leadership of Unionist First Minister David Trimble. Sinn Fein’s chief negotiator, Martin McGuinness and universally recognized as a former IRA commander (which he denies), is appointed Minister in charge of Ulster’s schools. Despite numerous ongoing setbacks and suspensions, Northern Ireland was finally on the way to a peaceful future.
