1921: The IRA attacks the homes of 14 B Specials in Co. Fermanagh killing four.

1922: The seeds continue to be sown for an Irish civil war. Rory O’Connor speaking in Dublin states that the Irish army is “in a dilemma, having the choice of supporting its oath to the Republic or still giving allegiance to the Dáil, which, it considers, has abandoned the Republic.  The contention of the army is that the Dáil did a thing that it had no right to do.” O’Connor would fight on the anti-Treaty side and be executed in December.

1983: Belfast born Chaim Herzog is elected by the Knesset to serve as the sixth President of Israel. He served two five year terms in what is mainly a ceremonial role. During World War II he served in the intelligence corps in the British Army, experience that served him well after the founding of the State of Israel where he was head of the IDF Military Intelligence Branch for five years.

In 1975, Herzog  was appointed Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations. During his tenure he spoke on a UN proposal that ‘Zionism is racism,’ giving a speech that regularly features in list of “Great Speeches.” resolution (General Assembly Resolution 3379). In a voice that still contained elements of a brogue (he left Ireland in 1935), Herzog condemned and symbolically tore up a copy of the hateful resolution,  stating: ‘For us, the Jewish people, this resolution based on hatred, falsehood and arrogance is devoid of any moral or legal value.’

Herzog speaking at UN. During his famous speech, he departed from his script as he became more passionate.

1904: Co. Laois born William Russel Grace dies. Grace was the first Roman Catholic mayor of New York and was founder of W.R Grace in 1854.

1914: The Curragh Mutiny: 57 British army officers threaten to resign or accept dismissal if   they are ordered to Northern Ireland and (potentially) fight members of the Ulster Volunteer Force who were threatening to take up arms to fight the Home Rule bill granting Ireland an autonomous Parliament. The Liberal government backed down and agreed to delay implementation of the bill. World War I put paid to the implementation of Home Rule for Ireland until the Irish War of Independence forced Britain to the treaty table in December 1921.

1921: A number of IRA attacks take place in County Kerry. The Second Kerry Brigade of the IRA ambush a train carrying British troops at Headford Junction railway station resulting in the deaths of at least three civilians, two IRA members and an undetermined number of English troops. (Some estimates suggest as many as 10). In Lispole, near Dingle, an IRA ambush goes badly wrong resulting in the deaths of three IRA volunteers.

1987: Internecine conflict often permeated republican politics. On this day, the IPLO (Irish People’s Liberation Organization, a breakaway group from the INLA – Irish National Liberation Army) kills INLA members Emmanuel Gargan in a Belfast bar and Kevin Barry Duffy in Armagh. The killings are in retaliation for the INLA execution of IPLO leader Gerard Steenson some days earlier. For different perceptions on the Republican struggle see IPLO and INLA

Ongoing feuding and violence continued between republican factions. The IPLO which allegedly was involved in drug dealing, effectively ceased activities after the Provisional IRA killed Belfast Brigade leader Sammy Ward in 1992.
