TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY

1629: Birth of Oliver Plunkett. Plunkett was the last Catholic martyr to be executed in England, July 1, 1681 and was was canonized in 1975. Oliver Plunkett was Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland who was found guilty of treason for essentially refusing to succumb to anti-Catholic legislation from England.

1884: Founding of the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) when Michael Cusack convened the first meeting of the ‘Gaelic Athletic Association for the Preservation and Cultivation of national Pastimes’ in Hayes’s Hotel, Thurles, Co Tipperary.

1920: Kevin Barry, an eighteen year old medical student was executed by British authorities for his part in an IRA operation which resulted in the deaths of three British soldiers. Barry has long been celebrated via the song Kevin Barry sung here by the world famous Dubliners.

1993: The Maastricht Treaty came into effect, formally establishing the European Union (EU).  The agreement called for a strengthened European parliament, the creation of a central European bank, and common foreign and security policies. The treaty also laid the groundwork for the establishment of a single European currency, to be known as the “euro.”
