January 2: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)
1920: Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork RIC barracks is captured by an IRA brigade from Midleton and Cobh. It was the first RIC barracks captured by IRA providing both a morale boost and supplies of ammunition. Here is a good account of The Capture of Carrigtwohill RIC Barrack. Note, date of the attack was January 2.
1921: British forces burn a number of houses in Midleton, Co. Cork in reprisal for the deaths of three RIC officers on December 29th.
1941: German bombers drop small number of bombs in Dublin and other parts of the country. It was one of a limited number of times, neutral Ireland was bombed. There is no clear rationale why the bombs were dropped. The greatest loss of life occurred on May 31, 1941 when at least twenty-eight people died as a result of bombing.
