Paddy Mayne SAS and Rugby International.

January 11: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by For the Love of Being Irish)

1915: Irish rugby international and founding member of the SAS (Special Air Service) Paddy Mayne is born in Newtownards. He gained his first cap for Ireland in 1937 against Wales and went on to take part in the British and Irish Lions rugby tour of South Africa in 1938.

Mayne was one of the most highly decorated Allied soldiers of the second world war winning winning four Distinguished Service Orders, the Legion d’Honneur and the Croix de Guerre. An absolute maverick who fought not just the enemy but friends also, the fact that he was not awarded the Victoria Cross for valour is often put down to his rebellious manner. He died in 1955 in a car accident.

1939: Irish National Teachers Organization calls for lifting of ban preventing married women from teaching.

1970: At Sinn Féin Ard Fheis (party conference) held in Dublin, the party split between those who were in favour of ending the policy of abstentionism – of not taking any parliamentary seats in Ireland or Britain and those where against.

Shipbuilder John Roach. Arthur Griffith Elected President.

January 10: TODAY IN IRISH HISTORY (published by IrishmanSpeaks)

1887: Death of Mitchelstown, Co. Cork born John Roach who became the most prominent shipbuilder in America during and after the civil war. He received a laudatory obituary in the New York Times.

1919: Legendary Irish bowler Mick Barry is born just outside Cork City. Road Bowling is a uniquely Irish sport, played in some pockets of the USA. It draws very large crowds to events held mainly in Cork and Armagh generating significant levels of excitement and gambling. Barry’s achievements were recognized by his native Cork City in December 2010.

1922: Arthur Griffith is elected President of the Provisional Government. Michael Collins becomes Minister for Finance. Éamon de Valera and 56 of his supporters walk out of Dáil Éireann. As they walk out, Collins shouts out: “Deserters all to the Irish nation in her hour of trial.” By the end of the year, both Griffith and Collins would be dead.
